Since its launch last year, the iPhone has taken the mobile phone market by storm. Many people have been keen to get their hands on the beautifully crafted device from Apple. Thanks to the revolutionary multi-touch display and super friendly user interface, there has never been so much hype over a mobile phone. Of course having such an expensive and attractive device such as an iPhone means you have to take good care of it. Having a large 3.5” display makes it a little harder to keep in top condition. Today, we will be looking at the Otterbox iPhone Defender.
“It all began around the very simple concept of a “box.”
Mastermind and CEO Curt Richardson, with his 25 years experience in tooling and molding wanted to build a company that was distinct and structured upon innovation and evolution. In 1996, OtterBox was born.
Our cases are dedicated to all the klutzy, spontaneous, chaotic, graceless individuals who have broken a device or valuable due to their active lifestyle. Like our customers, we’ve been there too! From the beginning, we have protected valuables through innovation. This “innovative spirit” has allowed evolution in our product lines to safeguard the hottest technologies such as iPod’s, smartphones, PDA’s, Tablet PC’s, laptops and other devices. We take the idea of a protective case to the next level so customers can find the ideal solution for any work environment or adventure!”
In the box, you get the case itself, a belt clip and some instructions.
To get the Defender on you simply have to remove the rubber rim and unclip the two sides with a screwdriver or your fingernails. Then you just simply place your iPhone in the case and screw it back together again and you’re done.
The case is constructed very well made and does actually fully protect your iPhone from drops unlike some cases we’ve seen in the past. The Defender covers the front with a thin plastic and most of the buttons are covered by rubber. The Defender has conveniently placed windows on the back for the Apple logo and camera to be exposed which is a helpful touch.
There is one missing button that is totally covered and that is the ringer volume which is not accessible when the cover is on so you must make sure you set it according to your preference before installing.
We have been using the Defender ever since we have received it and we can use the iPhone just as normal, maybe expect for the ringer volume button but that’s no problem. The Defender does add weight and size to the iPhone but you get used to it within a few minutes of use. Our biggest concern, probably shared with many others, was its performance with the touch interface. Thankfully, the plastic display cover caused no problems at all and it worked just as it had before.
The Otterbox Defender Case for the iPhone is a solid, rugged and well made case that offers a much higher level of protection compared to a lot of others you will find on the market. At just under $50, this would be money well spent considering the cost of the iPhone.
